13 Tips for the Ultimate Gaming Experience On Your Low End PC

I myself was an intense gamer before. But now I don't get much time to spend with games. I wanted to share some tips for pc gamers for a better game play. Most of you use must be using Windows operating system on their computers. And I will be focusing on tips for Windows systems. And I will be talking about PC video games (and not some flash games or emulated games of other consoles).

Zombie game processes

#1 Sometimes you may find games may not start after double clicking on the game executable. You will see the process in the Task Manager but the game isn't opening up. You may have tried double clicking again on the game file. And now the game may open but later some time the game will start from the beginning. If you minimize, you may find two instances of games. When the game doesn't run start Task Manager (use Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end the process of the game. And run it again. Now the game will open.

#2 If you press windows key unknowingly, game may minimize and you won't find the mouse responding. If you get yourself in this press F6 and press Enter, game will come back to full screen. If you wanted to exit game it would be better to exit by using "quit game" in the game.

Game Crashes

#3 Isn't it is annoying when it lags or crashes while we play our favorite video games? Of course it is when you passed the level you were struggling to get through and crashed just before saving the game. Game crashes are common, nothing to worry about it. Most cases it would be wrong graphics settings. If the game crashes and you find Windows not responding press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Then start task manager and end the process of the game by right clicking on the process. If it doesn’t work try logging off. If nothing is responding restart by the button on the system unit.

Windows Crashes

#4 But Windows rarely crashes while playing games. Note that if it does, the game or its settings are not suitable for your system. Do you know what the thing to check before buying a game is? It's the minimum system requirements for running the game. Only install games that support your Operating System and hardware. Your system meeting minimum requirements of a game doesn't mean that you can play the game on your computer smoothly (Not every game but most of them are).

Performance

First thing is to optimize your computer for maximum performance.

#5 Update the video card drivers with the Windows Update. Newer the better! It is recommended to update drivers but not too important. You can use some other tools for optimizing your computer (like Tune Up Utilities-It is not free).Or you could stick to the common maintenance tasks like defragmenting and deleting unnecessary files with Disk Cleanup. Deleting the temp files can also speed up your computer. I have explained these in my previous posts.

#6 Scan your computer with anti-virus softwares. Viruses can slow down your computer. Antivirus can slow down your system too.

#7 On lower end systems (or others too), it would be better to close any and all programs (including anti-virus software) that are running in the background. Close the media players too. Listening to music while gaming is cool but it uses up all your resources.

#8 Even with the minimum graphics settings you may not get a satisfactory game play. I can give a little advice for solving this if a game performs slowly on system that meets minimum requirements. Run the game executable (or launcher or whatever it is). After the game starts minimize the game and start the task manager. You can use the Windows logo key on keyboard or Alt+Tab to minimize the games (It depends on the game). Then end the process named Rundll32.exe.It uses up all your resources and slowing down the game. This is a Windows' system process. It is not needed after starting the game. IT IS NOT A MALWARE.YOU SHOULD NEVER DELETE THIS FILE. Windows may not run if the file is missing. After ending the process you can maximize the game and continue playing it.
Note: You need to do this every time you start the game.

#9 It is better to choose games which require resources less than your system have. By resources I meant the processor clock rate (also some new game require of dual core processors), RAM, Video memory, hard disk space etc. If you can't find games matching your system configurations it would be better to think about upgrading to a newer system. Most of the games released by year 2010 have minimum requirements that of an average PC. But to play newest games with high graphics quality settings, you should have a computer with a good processor, RAM and Hard Disk Drive.

Graphics Settings

I will explain some typical settings found on most of the games. You can find more game specific information on settings from the game readme file. You should have seen the graphics settings in the games. Usually most of you would have left it untouched. You can experience a better game play with the right settings. Most of the games or all of them are poor on detecting the right settings for your computer. So you have to use the suitable settings to get the most from your PC.

#10 First set the lowest screen resolution on the game's display options. Then see how it works. Then try increasing it try playing with this settings. Continue this till you see much loss in performance. Use the settings with balanced quality and performance. You don't have to use the resolution as the real screen resolution. For me performance is the most important so I use low resolution in most games.

#11 You can turn V-Sync. Turning it off would increase game performance.

#12 You can set Details, Texture filtering, Anti aliasing etc. through the method you used for setting screen resolution.

#13 I use software named Game Booster from IObit Information Technology. From my experience I find it useful. It is also free software. I'm sure that you will like too! It's really easy to use as it allows you to launch games in your computer from Game Booster window itself.
